ICC men's event

The Men's T20 World Cup: India's 2026 title and every winner since 2007.

The 2026 Men's T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from 7 February to 8 March 2026, is finished: India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final. This page covers that tournament, the 2022 and 2024 finals, and every winner the ICC lists since the first edition in 2007.

Status on 22 October 2026

The 2026 tournament is finished and India are the champions. India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, according to the BCCI's release of 9 March 2026; the ICC's tournament guide of 6 February 2026 set the final for 8 March 2026. The research behind this page did not cover the dates or hosts of the next edition, so we do not give them.

The 2026 tournament

The ICC's guide, published on 6 February 2026, set out the shape of the event: 20 teams in four groups of five, a Super 8 stage starting on 22 February, semi-finals on 4 and 5 March and the final on 8 March, 55 matches in all. Eight venues were used: Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai in India, and the R. Premadasa Stadium and the SSC in Colombo and Pallekele near Kandy in Sri Lanka. Pakistan played the Netherlands in the opening match in Colombo on 7 February. The ICC's history of the event, from 29 January 2026, calls this the 10th edition and says Italy made their debut.

Scotland in for Bangladesh. On 24 January 2026 the ICC announced that Scotland would take Bangladesh's place. The ICC said the Bangladesh Cricket Board had not confirmed it would play its scheduled matches in India, and that the ICC had declined to move those matches to Sri Lanka because independent assessments found no credible or verifiable security threat. Scotland were chosen as the highest-ranked T20I side that had missed qualification, 14th in the ICC's table at the time.

The 2026 final

The BCCI's release confirms the result, the margin and the venue. The rest of the detail below comes from Wikipedia, a secondary source, because no ICC page for the final itself was opened in our research.

  • New Zealand won the toss and chose to field (Wikipedia).
  • India made 255 for 5 from their 20 overs, and New Zealand were all out for 159 in 19 overs (Wikipedia).
  • Jasprit Bumrah was Player of the Match with 4 for 15 (Wikipedia).
  • The captains were Suryakumar Yadav for India and Mitchell Santner for New Zealand, and the umpires were Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf (Wikipedia).

Semi-finals (Wikipedia): New Zealand beat South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on 4 March 2026, and India beat England in Mumbai on 5 March 2026.

Wikipedia, citing a press headline, names Sanju Samson as Player of the Tournament. We could not confirm this on an ICC or BCCI page, so treat it as unconfirmed. The title was India's third Men's T20 World Cup, after 2007 and 2024, which matches the ICC's own list of winners below. The BCCI's release adds that India now hold the Men's T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, the Women's World Cup and both Under-19 World Cups.

The 2024 final

The 2024 tournament was staged in the West Indies and the USA; the ICC thanked Cricket West Indies and T20 USA, Inc. as hosts. India beat South Africa by seven runs in the final at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, on 29 June 2024: India made 176 for 7 and South Africa 169 for 8 (ICC match report; BCCI match page). Virat Kohli, with 76, was Player of the Match, and Jasprit Bumrah was Player of the Tournament with 15 wickets. India went through the event unbeaten, their only game without a win being a no result against Canada (ICC and BCCI pages, via a search summary). The BCCI called it India's second title, after 2007.

The 2022 final

In Australia in 2022, England beat Pakistan in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 13 November 2022. Pakistan made 137, and England chased the target of 138 (ICC, 13 November 2022). The ICC's match page lists the margin as five wickets (seen through a search summary). Sam Curran took 3 for 12 and was named both Player of the Final and Player of the Tournament. The ICC's winners list shows this as England's second title, after 2010.

2007 to 2024 from the ICC's history of the event (29 January 2026); 2022 venue also from the MCG timeline; 2026 result and venue from the BCCI, and the final's date from the ICC's tournament guide (6 February 2026). How the event grew

  • The ICC says Twenty20 was first raised in English county cricket circles and was introduced at professional level in 2003. The first men's T20 World Cup followed in South Africa in 2007 with 12 teams, and Chris Gayle's 117 there was the first century in a men's T20 international (ICC, 29 January 2026).
  • The ICC renamed its World T20 as the T20 World Cup on 23 November 2018, starting with the 2020 men's and women's events in Australia.
  • On 26 April 2018 the ICC gave international status to all T20 matches between its members, for men's teams from 1 January 2019.
  • The ICC says the tournament was not held for five years before it resumed in 2021, and grew from 16 to 20 teams in 2024, when the USA, Canada and Uganda made their debuts.

Rankings: the ICC's dated snapshot

ICC team rankings change after every series, so we quote only the ICC's annual update of 11 May 2026. The top three in the men's T20I table that day were India (275 rating points), England (262) and Australia (258). The men's T20I table matters beyond pride: the ICC says its rankings on 31 December 2026 will fix the remaining automatic men's places for cricket at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (see cricket at the Olympics).

Broadcasters for the 2026 tournament, as the ICC listed them, are on watching cricket. How a T20 match is structured is on formats.
